How to Build a Paper Airplane Launcher

Learn how to build a simple rubber band-powered launcher to help your paper airplanes fly further and faster. HowTo: Family Edition: family how-tos that actually help.

  1. Prepare the tube. Measure about 1 inch from one end of your cardboard tube. Ask a grown-up to help you cut two small notches, one on each side of the tube, directly across from each other.
  2. Attach the rubber bands. Loop your two rubber bands together to create one long chain. Slide the ends of the rubber band chain into the notches you cut in the tube.
  3. Secure the bands. Use your tape to firmly secure the rubber bands to the outside of the tube so they don't slip out of the notches when you pull them back.
  4. Launch your plane. Hold the tube in one hand. Place the back of your paper airplane against the rubber band, pull the rubber band back gently, and release it to send your plane flying.
