How to Create a Science Observation Journal

Learn how to build your own field notebook to record your scientific discoveries and observations about the world around you.

1. Prepare your pages. If you are using loose paper, fold 10 to 15 sheets in half to create a booklet. Use your ruler to draw a straight line down the side of each page to create a section for the date and time.
2. Design your cover. Cut your cardboard to the size of your paper. Use glue or tape to attach the cardboard to the front and back of your pages to make a sturdy cover. Decorate it with your name and the title 'My Science Journal'.
3. Set up your entry format. On the top of every page, write 'Date', 'Time', and 'Weather'. This helps you remember exactly when you made your discovery.
4. Start observing. Go outside or find something interesting inside, like a plant or an insect. Write down what you see, draw a detailed picture, and note any questions you have about why it looks the way it does.
