Learn how to build a basic telescope using two magnifying glasses to see the world up close. HowTo: Family Edition: family how-tos that actually help.
- Measure your lenses. Place your large magnifying glass at one end of your tube and trace the handle or the rim if necessary. Ask a grown-up to help you cut a small slit in the cardboard so the magnifying glass can sit securely at the end of the tube.
- Attach the lenses. Insert the larger magnifying glass into the front of the tube and the smaller one into the back. Use plenty of tape to make sure they are held firmly in place and are perfectly straight.
- Adjust and focus. Hold the telescope up to your eye. Slide the smaller lens tube back and forth until the image you are looking at becomes clear. Ask a grown-up to help you secure the final position with tape once you find the perfect spot.
