How to Make Your Own Volcanic Eruption
Create a fizzy, bubbling volcanic eruption right at home using simple kitchen ingredients and science. HowTo: Family Edition: family how-tos that actually help.
- Prepare your volcano base. Place your plastic bottle or glass in the center of the large tray. This tray will catch all the lava, so make sure it is steady and flat.
- Add the dry ingredients. Use your funnel to carefully pour the baking soda into the bottle. If you don't have a funnel, ask a grown-up to help you roll a piece of paper into a cone shape to guide the powder inside.
- Mix in the color and soap. Add the dish soap and a few drops of food coloring directly into the bottle on top of the baking soda. The soap helps make the eruption extra bubbly.
- Create the eruption. Pour the vinegar into the bottle quickly and stand back! Watch as the chemical reaction between the baking soda and vinegar creates a fizzy, colorful explosion.
