How to Make a Simple Bird Feeder

A step-by-step guide for kids to create a bird-friendly feeder using simple household items. HowTo: Family Edition: family how-tos that actually help.

1. Mark your windows. Use your marker to draw two large square windows on opposite sides of your carton, about two inches from the bottom. Ask a grown-up to help you carefully cut these out.
2. Make a perch. Poke a small hole just below each window. Slide your wooden spoon or twig through both holes so it sticks out on both sides. This gives the birds a place to sit while they eat.
3. Add the hanger. Ask a grown-up to poke two holes in the very top of the carton. Thread your string through the holes and tie the ends together to make a loop.
4. Fill and hang. Pour your birdseed into the bottom of the carton until it reaches the bottom of your cut-out windows. Find a sturdy tree branch outside and hang your new feeder where you can see it from the house.
