How to Build a Backyard Bird Feeder

Learn how to build a simple, eco-friendly bird feeder to welcome feathered friends into your backyard. HowTo: Family Edition: family how-tos that actually help.

1. Mark your spots. Use your marker to draw two small circles on opposite sides of the bottle, about 3 inches from the bottom. Repeat this a few inches higher, but rotate the bottle so the new holes are on different sides.
2. Cut the holes. Ask a grown-up to help you carefully cut the circles you marked. The holes should be just big enough for the handle of your wooden spoon to slide through.
3. Insert the perches. Slide the handle of the wooden spoon through the first set of holes. Make sure the wide part of the spoon is outside the bottle so the birds have a place to land and eat.
4. Add the seed. Use a funnel or a rolled-up piece of paper to pour birdseed into the bottle until it is nearly full. Screw the cap back on tightly.
5. Hang it up. Tie your twine tightly around the neck of the bottle and find a sturdy tree branch to hang your new feeder.
