How to Start a Nature Journal
Learn how to observe the world around you and keep a record of your outdoor discoveries in a personal nature journal.
- Pick your spot. Find a comfortable place to sit outside. It could be your backyard, a local park, or even just looking out your window. Ask a grown-up to help you choose a safe and quiet location.
- Observe and describe. Look closely at what is around you. What colors do you see? What sounds can you hear? Write down the date, the time, and the weather at the top of your page. Then, write a few sentences about what you notice.
- Draw your discovery. Pick one thing you see—like a tree, a bird, or a rock—and draw it in your journal. Don't worry about making it perfect; focus on the shapes and colors you see. You can label parts of your drawing if you want.
- Add a keepsake. If you found a fallen leaf or a flat piece of bark, you can use your glue stick or tape to attach it to your page. Ask a grown-up if you are unsure if it is okay to pick up an object.
