How to Start Your Own Vegetable Garden

A kid-friendly guide to planting, watering, and growing your own fresh vegetables in a small garden patch or container.

  1. Pick your spot. Find a place that gets plenty of sunshine. If you are using a container, make sure it has holes at the bottom so extra water can get out. Ask a grown-up to help you decide if you are using a pot or a patch in the ground.
  2. Prepare the soil. Fill your container with potting soil or loosen up the dirt in your garden patch using your trowel. Remove any big rocks or chunks of grass so the soil is soft and fluffy.
  3. Plant your seeds. Look at the back of your seed packet to see how deep to plant them. Use your finger to poke a small hole in the dirt, drop the seed in, and cover it gently with soil. Don't forget to put your plant marker nearby so you remember what you planted!
  4. Give them a drink. Use your watering can to gently sprinkle water over the soil. You want the soil to be damp like a wrung-out sponge, not soaking wet like a puddle.
