How to Start Your Own Kitchen Herb Garden
Learn how to grow your own tasty herbs on a windowsill or porch with this simple guide for young gardeners. HowTo: Family Edition: family how-tos that actually help.
- Prepare your pots. Place a thin layer of small pebbles at the bottom of your pots. This helps the extra water drain out so your plant roots stay healthy. Ask a grown-up to help you if the pots are heavy.
- Add the soil. Use your spoon or trowel to fill your pots with potting soil until they are about an inch away from the top. Gently pat the soil down, but don't squish it too hard.
- Plant the seeds. Look at your seed packet to see how deep to plant them. Usually, you just make a tiny hole with your finger, drop in 2-3 seeds, and cover them lightly with soil. Label your pots with popsicle sticks so you know what is growing where.
- Give them a drink. Use your watering can to gently sprinkle water over the soil until it feels damp. Place your pots in a spot that gets plenty of bright, natural sunlight.
