How to Create Simple Melodies for Your Songs

Learn how to turn your ideas into musical melodies using basic patterns and experimentation. HowTo: Family Edition: family how-tos that actually help.

  1. Pick a few notes. Start by choosing just three or four notes on your instrument. You don't need to know music theory; just pick notes that sound good together to your ears.
  2. Hum your lyrics. Read your lyrics out loud and notice the natural rhythm of the words. Try humming a melody that follows the rise and fall of your voice as you speak the words.
  3. Match your voice to the notes. Take the notes you picked in Step 1 and try to play them while you sing your lyrics. If it doesn't sound right, try swapping one note for a different one nearby.
  4. Record your progress. Once you find a pattern that you like, record it immediately. It is easy to forget a melody, so having a recording helps you keep track of your favorite versions.
