How to Talk to Your Parents About Your Day

A guide for kids on how to share their daily experiences and feelings with parents in a way that makes conversation easy and fun.

  1. Pick the right moment. Look for a time when things are calm, like during dinner, while riding in the car, or right before bedtime. Avoid starting a big conversation when they are rushing to get out the door or finishing a work task.
  2. Start with a high and a low. If you aren't sure what to say, try sharing one 'high' (the best part of your day) and one 'low' (the most challenging part). This helps your parents understand how your day actually felt.
  3. Ask questions back. Conversation is a two-way street! After you share, ask your parent, 'How was your day?' or 'What was the most interesting thing that happened to you today?'
  4. Be specific. Instead of saying 'school was fine,' try picking one detail. Mention a funny thing a friend said, a tricky problem you solved, or a game you played at recess.
