How to Set the Table for Family Dinner
Learn the simple, step-by-step way to set the table for a great family meal. HowTo: Family Edition: family how-tos that actually help.
- Lay down the placemats. Place one placemat in front of every chair at the table. If you are using a tablecloth, make sure it is centered and smooth.
- Position the plates. Put one dinner plate in the center of each placemat. The plate should be about an inch away from the edge of the table.
- Place the silverware. Place the fork to the left of the plate. Put the knife and spoon to the right of the plate, with the knife blade facing toward the plate. You can remember this by thinking: the fork has four letters, just like 'left'.
- Add the napkin and glass. Fold your napkin and place it either on top of the plate or to the left of the fork. Place the glass or cup above the knife, near the top right corner of the placemat.
