How to Talk to Your Parents About Your Schedule

Learn how to clearly communicate your busy schedule to your parents so you can manage your time and commitments effectively.

  1. Write down your commitments. Before you talk, make a list of everything you have going on, including school, sports, clubs, and homework. Be specific about the times and days so you have a clear picture of your week.
  2. Pick a calm time to chat. Ask your parents if they have a few minutes to talk about your schedule. Avoid bringing it up when they are rushing to leave or busy with work.
  3. Use 'I' statements to explain your needs. Instead of saying 'You don't understand my schedule,' try saying, 'I feel overwhelmed with my current schedule and would like to talk about how I can manage it better.' Explain what you are trying to achieve, like having more time for homework or rest.
  4. Listen to their perspective. Your parents might have their own reasons for why the schedule is set up the way it is. Listen to what they have to say without interrupting, and try to find a middle ground that works for everyone.
