How to Safely Use Kitchen Tools
Learn the basics of handling kitchen tools safely and confidently so you can help prepare meals like a pro. HowTo: Family Edition: family how-tos that actually help.
- Set up your station. Place your cutting board on a flat, stable surface like a kitchen counter or table. If the board slides around, ask a grown-up to place a damp paper towel underneath it to keep it steady.
- Practice the 'claw' grip. When holding food, curl your fingers into a claw shape so your fingertips are tucked away. This keeps your fingers safely behind your knuckles while you work.
- Use the butter knife. Hold the handle firmly with your dominant hand. Use a gentle sawing motion to cut soft items like a banana or a slice of cheese. Keep your other hand in the 'claw' grip away from the blade.
- Clean and store. Once you are finished, ask a grown-up to help you wash the tools in warm, soapy water. Always dry the tools immediately and place them back in their designated drawer or block.
