How to Pack Your Own School Lunch

A simple guide for kids to learn how to pack a healthy and delicious lunch for school. HowTo: Family Edition: family how-tos that actually help.

  1. Choose your containers. Find a clean lunch bag and your favorite containers. Make sure the lids snap shut tightly so your food stays fresh and doesn't spill in your backpack.
  2. Pack your main course. Place your main item, like a sandwich or pasta, into the largest container. If it is a sandwich, you might want to ask a grown-up to help you cut it in half.
  3. Add your sides. Fill smaller containers with fruits, vegetables, or snacks. Using small containers helps keep your crunchy snacks from getting soggy next to juicy fruits.
  4. Keep it cool. Slide a cold pack into your lunch bag. This helps keep your food at a safe temperature until it is time to eat. Ask a grown-up if you are unsure where to store the cold pack.
