How to Read Out Loud to Your Family
Learn the art of performing a story to bring your family together through the power of your voice. HowTo: Family Edition: family how-tos that actually help.
- Pick your story. Choose a book you already know well or one with fun characters. If you are reading to a younger sibling, pick something with pictures. If you are reading to adults, choose a funny story or a mystery that keeps everyone guessing.
- Practice your voices. Before you perform, read a page to yourself. Think about how the characters sound. Does the giant have a deep, rumbly voice? Does the mouse have a high, squeaky one? Try out a few different sounds to see what fits.
- Set the stage. Find a quiet spot where everyone can hear you. Ask your family to gather around. You might want to sit in a special chair or use a pillow to make sure you are comfortable.
- Perform with feeling. Read slowly and clearly. When something exciting happens, speed up your voice or get louder. When it is a quiet, secret moment, whisper. Pause at the end of chapters to let everyone think about what might happen next.
