How to Make Your Own Bed Properly: A Complete Guide for Families
Learn the step-by-step process to teach your children how to make their bed properly and build lasting life skills.
- Getting Started: Strip the Bed. Begin with a completely unmade bed. Remove all pillows, blankets, and sheets. This gives you a clean slate to work with and helps your child see each step clearly. Place everything on a chair or at the foot of the bed so you have room to work.
- Step 1: Put on the Fitted Sheet. Start with the fitted sheet, which has elastic edges. Show your child how to identify the longer sides (for the head and foot of the bed) versus the shorter sides. Start by putting one corner on, then stretch to put on the diagonal corner across from it. Repeat with the remaining two corners. The elastic should wrap snugly under the mattress with no wrinkles on top.
- Step 2: Add the Flat Sheet. Lay the flat sheet over the fitted sheet with the wider hem at the head of the bed. The sheet should hang evenly on both sides with more length at the foot than the head. Smooth out any wrinkles with your hands, working from the center outward.
- Step 3: Create Hospital Corners. At the foot of the bed, tuck the sheet under the mattress. For crisp corners, lift the side edge of the sheet at a 45-degree angle, creating a triangle. Tuck the hanging portion under the mattress, then fold the triangular part down and tuck it under as well. Repeat on the other side.
- Step 4: Add Blankets or Comforters. Place your blanket or comforter on top, leaving about 6 inches from the head of the bed so the sheet shows. Make sure it hangs evenly on both sides. For younger children, a simple pull-up-and-smooth approach works fine. Older kids can learn to tuck and fold the bottom edge.
- Step 5: Arrange Pillows. Fluff each pillow by giving it a good shake and squeezing it to redistribute the filling. Place pillows at the head of the bed with the open end of pillowcases facing away from the center. If you have decorative pillows or stuffed animals, these go in front of the sleeping pillows.
- Final Touches. Step back and look at the bed. Smooth any wrinkles, adjust corners if needed, and make sure everything looks straight and even. The bed should look inviting and neat. Celebrate this accomplishment with your child – they've just mastered an important life skill!
