How to Teach Your Child to Do Their Own Laundry
A step-by-step guide to teaching children of all ages how to wash, dry, and care for their own clothes independently.
- Start with the Basics: Sorting and Preparing. Begin by teaching your child how to sort clothes by color and fabric type. Show them how to separate whites, lights, and darks into different piles. Teach them to check all pockets for items like tissues, coins, or toys that could damage the machine or other clothes. Have them turn clothes right-side out and zip up zippers to prevent snagging. Make this fun by turning it into a game or playing music while you sort together.
- Understanding the Washing Machine. Take time to explain each part of the washing machine and what it does. Show your child how to load clothes without overpacking - they should be able to move freely in the drum. Teach them to measure detergent according to the package directions, explaining that more isn't always better. Start with basic settings like water temperature (cold for darks, warm for lights) and cycle type (normal for everyday items). Let them press the buttons and start the machine while you supervise.
- Moving to the Dryer. Explain the importance of cleaning the lint filter before every load and show your child how to do it safely. Teach them which items can go in the dryer and which need to air dry (like swimwear or delicate fabrics). Help them understand different heat settings - high for towels and jeans, medium for most clothes, and low or air-dry for delicate items. Show them how to properly load the dryer without cramming clothes in.
- Folding and Putting Away. Start with simple items like washcloths and t-shirts, then gradually work up to more complex items like fitted sheets. Show your child how to fold clothes immediately after the dryer stops to prevent wrinkles. Create a folding station on a bed or clean surface with good lighting. Teach them to hang items that wrinkle easily. Make putting clothes away part of the routine by having designated spots for everything in their dresser and closet.
- Creating a Routine. Help your child establish a regular laundry schedule that works for your family. This might be once a week or when their hamper is full. Create a simple checklist they can follow independently, listing each step from sorting to putting away. Consider having them start with just their own clothes before expanding to help with family laundry. Praise their efforts and be patient with mistakes - they're part of learning.
