How to Solve Your First Crossword Puzzle

A simple guide to help you tackle your first crossword puzzle with confidence and fun. HowTo: Family Edition: family how-tos that actually help.

  1. Scan the clues. Read through the clues for both 'Across' and 'Down'. Don't worry about filling in the blanks yet; just look for the ones that have an answer you know right away.
  2. Start with the easy wins. Write down the answers you are 100% sure about. Start in one corner of the grid and work your way out. If you aren't sure, skip it and come back later.
  3. Use the cross-letters. When you have a few words filled in, look at the blank squares that intersect with your existing words. Those letters can give you hints for the words you haven't solved yet.
  4. Check your spelling. If a word doesn't seem to fit or the intersecting letters look wrong, double-check your spelling. If you get stuck, ask a grown-up to look at the clue with you—they might help you think about it in a new way.
