How to Solve Your First Crossword Puzzle
A simple guide to help you tackle your first crossword puzzle with confidence and fun. HowTo: Family Edition: family how-tos that actually help.
- Scan the clues. Read through the clues for both 'Across' and 'Down'. Don't worry about filling in the blanks yet; just look for the ones that have an answer you know right away.
- Start with the easy wins. Write down the answers you are 100% sure about. Start in one corner of the grid and work your way out. If you aren't sure, skip it and come back later.
- Use the cross-letters. When you have a few words filled in, look at the blank squares that intersect with your existing words. Those letters can give you hints for the words you haven't solved yet.
- Check your spelling. If a word doesn't seem to fit or the intersecting letters look wrong, double-check your spelling. If you get stuck, ask a grown-up to look at the clue with you—they might help you think about it in a new way.
