How to Make Tacos from Scratch with Your Family

Learn to make delicious homemade tacos from scratch, including fresh tortillas, seasoned meat, and toppings the whole family will love.

  1. Gather Your Ingredients. For the tortillas, you'll need 2 cups all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon salt, 1/4 cup vegetable oil, and 3/4 cup warm water. For the filling, gather 1 pound ground beef or turkey, 1 packet taco seasoning (or make your own with chili powder, cumin, paprika, and garlic powder), and 1/4 cup water. For toppings, prepare shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, shredded cheese, sour cream, and any other favorites your family enjoys. Having everything ready before you start makes the process much smoother.
  2. Make the Tortillas. Mix the flour and salt in a large bowl. Add the oil and warm water, then stir until a dough forms. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5 minutes until it's smooth and elastic. Let it rest for 15 minutes covered with a damp towel. Divide the dough into 8 equal pieces and roll each piece into a thin circle about 6-8 inches across. Heat a dry skillet over medium-high heat and cook each tortilla for 1-2 minutes per side until light brown spots appear. Keep finished tortillas warm by wrapping them in a clean kitchen towel.
  3. Prepare the Meat Filling. Heat a large skillet over medium heat and add the ground meat. Cook, breaking it up with a spoon, until it's completely browned and cooked through, about 6-8 minutes. Drain any excess fat. Add the taco seasoning and water, then simmer for 3-4 minutes until the liquid has mostly evaporated and the meat is well-coated with spices. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed.
  4. Set Up a Taco Assembly Station. Arrange all your prepared ingredients in bowls on the counter or table. Put the warm tortillas in a basket or on a plate covered with a towel to keep them soft. Place the seasoned meat in a serving bowl with a spoon. Set out small bowls for each topping with serving spoons. This setup lets everyone build their tacos exactly how they like them and makes the meal interactive and fun for kids.
  5. Assemble and Enjoy. Show family members how to warm a tortilla briefly in the skillet if desired, then add a spoonful of meat down the center. Add toppings in whatever combination appeals to each person. Fold the tortilla in half and enjoy immediately while everything is fresh and warm. Encourage kids to try different topping combinations to find their favorites.
