How to Cook a Perfect Baked Potato in the Oven
Learn the simple steps to bake fluffy, crispy-skinned potatoes in your oven every time.
- Choose and Prepare Your Potatoes. Pick russet potatoes for the best results - they're starchy and create that perfect fluffy texture inside. Look for potatoes that are firm, without soft spots or green areas. Scrub each potato under cold running water with a vegetable brush to remove dirt. Pat them completely dry with a clean kitchen towel. Use a fork to poke 8-10 holes all over each potato - this prevents them from bursting in the oven.
- Season the Potatoes. Rub each potato all over with a small amount of olive oil or melted butter. This helps create that crispy skin everyone loves. Sprinkle coarse salt generously over the oiled potatoes and rub it in with your hands. The salt draws out moisture and makes the skin extra crispy.
- Bake the Potatoes. Preheat your oven to 425°F. Place the prepared potatoes directly on the middle oven rack - no baking sheet needed. Put a piece of aluminum foil on the rack below to catch any drips. Bake for 45-60 minutes, depending on the size of your potatoes. Medium potatoes take about 45 minutes, while large ones need closer to an hour.
- Test for Doneness. Your potatoes are ready when the skin feels crispy and the potato gives slightly when gently squeezed with an oven mitt. You can also insert a fork or knife into the center - it should slide in easily with no resistance. The internal temperature should reach 210°F if you're using a thermometer.
- Serve Your Baked Potatoes. Remove potatoes from the oven and let them cool for 2-3 minutes. Using a knife, cut a deep slit down the length of each potato. Gently squeeze the ends toward the center to open up the potato and fluff the flesh with a fork. Add your favorite toppings like butter, sour cream, cheese, chives, or bacon bits.
