How to Use a Measuring Tape Like a Pro
Learn the simple steps to accurately measure objects and spaces using a standard retractable measuring tape. HowTo: Family Edition: family how-tos that actually help.
- Hook it on. Place the metal hook at the end of the tape against the edge of the object you are measuring. You might notice the hook is a little loose; that is on purpose so it can adjust for measuring inside or outside corners.
- Pull and lock. Pull the tape out until you reach the end of your object. If your tape has a locking switch, push it down to keep the tape from sliding back while you read the measurement.
- Read the marks. Look for the big numbers, which are inches. Between the inches, you will see smaller lines. The longest line in the middle is the half-inch mark. Count the lines to see exactly how long your object is.
- Write it down. Before you let the tape snap back, write your measurement on your paper. Always double-check your number by measuring one more time.
