How to Start Your First Woodworking Project
Learn the basics of woodworking with simple tools and safety steps to build your first wooden creation. HowTo: Family Edition: family how-tos that actually help.
- Measure and mark. Use your measuring tape and pencil to mark exactly where you want your pieces to connect. Ask a grown-up to help you double-check your measurements so everything lines up perfectly.
- Sand the surfaces. Before you join anything, use your sanding block to smooth the edges of your wood. Start with medium grit sandpaper, then finish with fine grit until the wood feels soft to the touch.
- Apply glue and clamp. Apply a thin, even line of wood glue to the areas you are connecting. Press the pieces together firmly and use clamps to hold them in place while the glue dries, usually for at least an hour.
- Check the bond. Once the time is up, carefully remove the clamps. Gently wiggle the pieces to make sure they are secure. If there is any extra glue squeezed out, wipe it away with a damp cloth before it hardens.
