How to Organize Your Workspace for Better Focus

A step-by-step guide to clearing your desk and setting up a workspace that helps you get your schoolwork or projects done faster.

  1. Clear everything off. Take every single item off your desk. Put everything into a pile on the floor or a nearby bed. Wipe down the surface of your desk with a damp cloth so you have a fresh, clean start.
  2. Sort your items. Look at your pile and sort items into three groups: things you use every day (like your favorite pencils), things you use sometimes (like a stapler or extra paper), and things that don't belong on a desk at all (like old snacks or toys). Ask a grown-up if you aren't sure if something is trash.
  3. Create zones. Put your 'every day' items within easy reach of your hands. Place your 'sometimes' items in a drawer or a box nearby. If you have loose papers, put them into folders so they don't get messy again.
  4. Add a 'Focus Item'. Choose one thing that helps you feel calm, like a small plant, a photo, or a fidget toy. Keep this on your desk, but make sure it doesn't distract you from your work.
