How to Navigate Communication Repair After a Conflict

Practical steps for re-establishing connection and addressing underlying issues after a disagreement with your partner.

  1. Creating Space for De-escalation. Before attempting to repair, it is often necessary to ensure both partners are regulated. When the nervous system is in a state of high arousal, productive communication is physically difficult. Some couples find it helpful to take a timed break, agreeing to return to the conversation once both parties feel calm enough to listen without defensiveness. Once the immediate intensity has faded, the goal is to shift from 'winning' the argument to understanding the other person's experience. This is not about agreeing on the facts of what happened, but rather acknowledging the impact the conflict had on the relationship.
  2. Focusing on Impact Rather Than Intent. A common point of friction is the disconnect between what one person meant to do and how the other person received it. During the repair process, focus on the impact. If a partner says, 'I felt ignored when you didn't look up from your phone,' responding with 'I didn't mean to ignore you' often shuts down the conversation. Instead, consider acknowledging the feeling: 'I see that my behavior made you feel ignored, and I am sorry that was the result.'
