How to Make a Tornado in a Jar

Create your own miniature, swirling weather vortex right in your kitchen using simple household supplies. HowTo: Family Edition: family how-tos that actually help.

  1. Fill the jar. Fill your glass jar with water until it is about three-quarters full. Ask a grown-up to help you pour to avoid making a mess.
  2. Add the secret ingredients. Add one teaspoon of dish soap and one teaspoon of white vinegar to the water. If you want your tornado to sparkle, add a small pinch of glitter now.
  3. Seal and spin. Screw the lid on tightly. Hold the jar by the lid and move your wrist in a quick, circular motion to get the water spinning inside. Stop and watch the center of the jar.
