How to Build Your Own Magnetic Compass

Learn how to create a working compass using a needle and a magnet to explore the science of Earth's magnetic field.

  1. Magnetize your needle. Hold the needle by the eye and rub the magnet along the needle in one direction only. Do this about 30 to 50 times to charge the metal.
  2. Prepare the float. Ask a grown-up to help you cut a thin slice of cork. Carefully push the needle through the center of the cork slice so it sits horizontally.
  3. Set your compass afloat. Fill your bowl with water and gently place the cork with the needle on the surface. Watch as the needle slowly rotates to align itself with the Earth's magnetic field.
