How to Measure and Compare Textures

Learn how to scientifically test and categorize the textures of objects around your home using simple observation tools.

1. Set up your testing station. Clear a space on a table and lay out your objects. On your piece of paper, create a chart with three columns: 'Object Name', 'Prediction', and 'Actual Feel'.
2. Make your predictions. Look at each object without touching it. Write down what you think it will feel like—is it bumpy, fuzzy, cold, or hard? This is your hypothesis.
3. The blindfold test. Ask a grown-up to tie the blindfold around your eyes. Have them hand you one object at a time. Use your fingers to rub, press, and hold the item. Describe the texture out loud to your partner, then write down the real feeling in your chart.
4. Compare and analyze. Take off your blindfold and look at your chart. Did the objects feel the way you thought they would? Group your objects into categories like 'Soft,' 'Hard,' or 'Textured' based on your results.
