How to Build a Simple Electromagnet

Learn how to create a temporary magnet using a battery, a copper wire, and a metal nail. HowTo: Family Edition: family how-tos that actually help.

  1. Strip the wire ends. Ask a grown-up to help you strip about one inch of insulation off both ends of your copper wire so the bare metal is exposed.
  2. Wrap the nail. Starting near the head of the nail, wrap the wire tightly around the nail. Keep the loops close together and make sure they don't overlap. Leave about 6 inches of wire free at both ends.
  3. Connect to the battery. Tape one end of the bare wire to the positive (+) end of the battery, and the other end of the wire to the negative (-) end. Ask a grown-up to help you secure the wires firmly with electrical tape.
  4. Test your magnet. Touch the tip of your nail to the paperclips. If your electromagnet is working, the paperclips will stick to the nail!
