How to Build a Simple Electromagnet
Learn how to create a temporary magnet using a battery, a copper wire, and a metal nail. HowTo: Family Edition: family how-tos that actually help.
- Strip the wire ends. Ask a grown-up to help you strip about one inch of insulation off both ends of your copper wire so the bare metal is exposed.
- Wrap the nail. Starting near the head of the nail, wrap the wire tightly around the nail. Keep the loops close together and make sure they don't overlap. Leave about 6 inches of wire free at both ends.
- Connect to the battery. Tape one end of the bare wire to the positive (+) end of the battery, and the other end of the wire to the negative (-) end. Ask a grown-up to help you secure the wires firmly with electrical tape.
- Test your magnet. Touch the tip of your nail to the paperclips. If your electromagnet is working, the paperclips will stick to the nail!
