How to Make a Catapult from Popsicle Sticks

Build a working catapult using popsicle sticks, rubber bands, and a spoon to launch marshmallows or ping pong balls.

  1. Make the base stack. Take 8 popsicle sticks and stack them on top of each other. Wrap a rubber band tightly around one end of the stack, about 1 inch from the edge. Wrap another rubber band around the other end the same way. This creates your base.
  2. Create the arm. Take your remaining 2 popsicle sticks. Carefully pull apart your base stack about 2 inches from one end. Slide one popsicle stick between the top and bottom pieces at this spot. This stick will be your catapult arm.
  3. Secure the arm. Wrap a rubber band in a figure-8 pattern around the base and the arm stick where they meet. Make it tight so the arm stays in place but can still move up and down when you push it.
  4. Add the launcher. Take your plastic spoon and use another rubber band to attach it to the free end of your arm stick. Wrap the rubber band around both the spoon handle and the popsicle stick several times until it's secure.
  5. Test and adjust. Place a cotton ball or mini marshmallow in the spoon. Push down on the spoon end and let go quickly. If it doesn't launch well, tighten your rubber bands or adjust the spoon position.
