How to Make a Beat on Your Phone
Create your own music beats using free apps on your phone with simple taps and loops.
- Download and open your beat-making app. Search your app store for a free beat-making app. GarageBand works great on iPhones and iPads, while FL Studio Mobile or BandLab are good choices for Android. Download it and open the app. Look for options like 'Create New Project' or 'Start Making Music.'
- Choose your first drum sound. Most apps will show you different instrument categories. Tap on 'Drums' or look for drum kit icons. You'll see different drum sounds like kick drums (the deep boom), snare drums (the sharp crack), and hi-hats (the quick tss sound). Pick a kick drum to start with.
- Create a simple drum pattern. Look for a grid or timeline where you can place beats. Most apps divide music into 4 beats per measure. Try tapping to place your kick drum on beats 1 and 3. This creates the basic backbone of your beat. Play it back by hitting the play button to hear how it sounds.
- Add a snare drum. Now select a snare drum sound. Place snare hits on beats 2 and 4 of your pattern. When you play it back, you should hear: kick-snare-kick-snare. This is the foundation of most popular music beats!
- Fill in with hi-hats. Select a hi-hat sound (it sounds like 'tss'). You can place these between your kick and snare hits, or on every beat to keep the rhythm moving. Try placing hi-hats on all 4 beats first, then experiment with different patterns.
- Add a melody or bass line. Look for other instrument options like piano, bass, or synthesizer sounds. Create a new track for your melody. Choose 3-4 notes that sound good together and arrange them in a simple pattern. Keep it simple at first - even repeating the same few notes can sound great!
- Layer and loop your beat. Most apps let you loop your beat so it repeats continuously. Turn on the loop function and listen to how all your sounds work together. You can adjust the volume of each track individually to balance your beat perfectly.
- Save and share your creation. Once you're happy with your beat, look for a 'Save' or 'Export' option. Give your beat a cool name! Many apps let you share your creation directly or save it to your phone's music library.
