How to Make a Baking Soda Volcano

Create an awesome erupting volcano with simple kitchen ingredients and watch the fizzy chemical reaction in action.

  1. Build your volcano base. Mix the flour, salt, water, and oil in the large bowl until you get a dough that feels like play dough. If it's too sticky, add more flour. If it's too dry, add water one tablespoon at a time.
  2. Shape your volcano. Place the empty bottle in the center of your tray. Mold the dough around the bottle to make a volcano shape, leaving the bottle opening uncovered. Make sure the bottle neck sticks up about 1 inch above your volcano. Pat the dough firmly so it stays in place.
  3. Prepare the eruption mixture. In the small cup, mix the vinegar, red food coloring, and dish soap. Stir gently. The soap will make your eruption extra foamy and the food coloring makes it look like lava.
  4. Load your volcano. Using the funnel, pour the baking soda into the bottle inside your volcano. Tap the sides gently to make sure all the baking soda goes down to the bottom.
  5. Make it erupt!. Quickly pour the vinegar mixture into the bottle and step back! The volcano will start fizzing and foaming immediately. Watch as your red 'lava' flows down the sides of your volcano.
