How to Build a Paper Rocket

Create a flying paper rocket using simple materials and launch it with a straw for fun indoor or outdoor play.

  1. Cut your rocket body. Cut a rectangle from your paper that's 4 inches wide and 6 inches long. This will be your rocket's body. Ask a grown-up to help if you need it.
  2. Make the rocket tube. Wrap your paper rectangle around the straw lengthwise. The straw should fit snugly inside but still slide easily. Tape the paper edge down to make a tube, but don't tape it to the straw.
  3. Seal the nose. Pinch one end of your paper tube completely closed and tape it shut. This is the nose of your rocket - air needs to stay trapped inside for it to fly.
  4. Add weight to the nose. Take a small piece of modeling clay or playdough (about the size of a grape) and stick it inside the closed end of your rocket. This weight helps your rocket fly straight.
  5. Decorate your rocket. Use markers or crayons to draw flames, windows, your name, or anything else you want on your rocket. Let any ink dry completely before the next step.
  6. Test your rocket. Slide your rocket onto the straw with the open end toward you. Point the straw away from people and breakable things, then blow hard and fast through the straw. Your rocket should shoot off!
