How to Observe Nature with a DIY Water Magnifying Glass

Learn how to build a simple, effective magnifying tool using household items to get an up-close look at the natural world.

  1. Prepare your container. Find a clear plastic container with a completely flat, smooth bottom. Make sure it is clean and dry so you have a clear view through the plastic.
  2. Add the water. Ask a grown-up to help you fill the container with about two inches of clear water. The water acts as a lens to help magnify the objects you place underneath.
  3. Start your observation. Place your container on top of a flat surface where you want to look, such as a leaf, a rock, or a piece of paper with small writing. Look directly down through the water to see how the objects appear larger.
