How to Build a Simple Scribble-Bot

Learn how to build a motorized robot that draws its own patterns using simple household materials. HowTo: Family Edition: family how-tos that actually help.

  1. Attach the legs. Turn your cup upside down. Place your three markers around the outside of the cup so they form a tripod shape. Use masking tape to secure them firmly to the sides of the cup, making sure the marker tips touch the table equally so the cup stands level.
  2. Mount the motor. Use your foam tape or glue gun to attach the motor to the top (the bottom of the cup) of your robot. Make sure the spinning part of the motor hangs slightly off the edge of the cup so it can spin freely without hitting the plastic.
  3. Create an off-center weight. Attach a small object, like a piece of an eraser or a cork, to the spinning part of the motor. This 'off-center' weight is what makes the robot vibrate and move when the motor spins.
  4. Connect the power. Connect the battery holder to the motor wires. Use tape to secure the battery holder to the top of the cup. As soon as the wires touch, the motor will spin and your robot will start to wiggle.
