How to Make a Volcano Eruption

Learn how to create a classic fizzy volcano eruption using simple household ingredients and safe chemistry. HowTo: Family Edition: family how-tos that actually help.

  1. Build your volcano. Place your plastic bottle in the center of your tray. Use the modeling clay or crumpled aluminum foil to build a mountain shape around the bottle. Make sure the opening of the bottle remains clear and uncovered.
  2. Mix the base. Use your funnel to pour the baking soda into the bottle. Add the dish soap on top of the baking soda; the soap helps create extra bubbles for a thicker, slower-moving lava effect.
  3. Prepare the eruption. In a separate cup, mix the vinegar with a few drops of food coloring. When you are ready for the eruption, quickly pour the colored vinegar into the bottle and stand back to watch the reaction.
