How to Build a Volcano That Erupts

Create your own erupting volcano at home using simple kitchen ingredients and a fun chemical reaction. HowTo: Family Edition: family how-tos that actually help.

1. Build your mountain. Place your empty water bottle in the center of the baking tray. Use your modeling clay or crumpled aluminum foil to build a mountain shape around the bottle, leaving the opening at the top clear.
2. Add the base ingredients. Using your funnel, pour the baking soda into the bottle. Next, add the dish soap and a few drops of red food coloring directly into the bottle with the baking soda.
3. Make it erupt. When you are ready, pour the vinegar into the bottle quickly. Step back and watch as the chemical reaction creates a bubbling red lava flow down the sides of your mountain.
