How to Become a Backyard Bug Detective

Learn how to spot and identify the tiny creatures living in your garden using simple tools and observation. HowTo: Family Edition: family how-tos that actually help.

  1. Pick your patrol zone. Choose a small patch of grass, a flower bed, or a tree to observe. Sit very quietly for five minutes and watch for movement before you start looking closely.
  2. Use your observation tools. When you see a bug, use your magnifying glass to look at its body shape, the number of legs it has, and what color it is. Ask a grown-up to help you take a clear photo if you want to remember exactly what it looks like.
  3. Record your findings. In your notebook, write down where you found the bug, what it was doing (like sitting on a leaf or flying), and draw a quick sketch of it. Use your field guide to try and match your bug to a name.
