How to Grow Herbs on a Windowsill with Your Kids
Learn how to start and maintain a thriving windowsill herb garden that the whole family can enjoy together.
- Choose the Right Window and Setup. Pick a window that gets at least 4-6 hours of direct sunlight each day - south-facing windows work best. Make sure the windowsill is wide enough for your pots, or add a small shelf if needed. The area should stay between 65-75°F during the day. Avoid windows near heat vents or air conditioners that create temperature swings.
- Select Beginner-Friendly Herbs. Start with easy-to-grow herbs that your family will actually use. Basil, parsley, chives, and mint are perfect for beginners - they grow quickly and forgive mistakes. Oregano and thyme are also good choices. Buy small plants from the garden center rather than starting from seeds, as they'll give you faster success and keep kids engaged.
- Get the Right Pots and Soil. Use pots that are at least 6 inches deep with drainage holes in the bottom. Terra cotta or plastic pots both work fine. Place saucers underneath to protect your windowsill. Fill pots with good quality potting mix - never use garden soil, which is too heavy and doesn't drain well indoors. Each herb should have its own pot so you can care for them individually.
- Plant and Water Properly. Gently remove herbs from their nursery pots and place them in your prepared containers at the same depth they were growing before. Water thoroughly until water runs out the drainage holes, then let the excess drain away. Check soil daily by sticking your finger an inch into the dirt - water when it feels dry. Most herbs prefer to dry out slightly between waterings.
- Harvest and Maintain Your Herbs. Start harvesting when plants are well-established, usually 2-3 weeks after planting. Pinch off stems just above a set of leaves - this encourages bushier growth. Remove any flowers that appear to keep leaves tender and flavorful. Turn pots weekly so all sides get equal light. Feed with liquid fertilizer once a month during growing season.
