How to Become a Neighborhood Tree Detective

Learn to identify the trees in your backyard or local park by looking at their leaves, bark, and shape. HowTo: Family Edition: family how-tos that actually help.

1. Observe the tree's shape. Stand back from the tree and look at its overall silhouette. Is it tall and skinny like a needle, or wide and round like a giant umbrella? Write down your observations in your notebook.
2. Examine the leaves. Look closely at the leaves. Are they shaped like stars, ovals, or long needles? Take a photo or draw a quick sketch of the leaf shape and how they are attached to the branch.
3. Check the bark texture. Use your magnifying glass to look at the trunk. Is the bark smooth, peeling, or rough and craggy? Gently touch it to see if it feels like paper or thick armor.
4. Use your identification tool. Ask a grown-up to help you use your identification app to scan the leaf or bark. Compare what the app suggests with the notes you took to see if it matches.
