How to Write a Song About Your Day

A simple guide to help families turn daily experiences into fun, memorable songs together.

  1. Start by talking through your day. Gather everyone together and share what happened during the day. Ask questions like 'What made you laugh today?' or 'What was your favorite part?' Write down interesting moments, funny incidents, or even small frustrations. These real experiences will become the heart of your song. Don't worry about finding dramatic events – everyday moments like making breakfast, walking the dog, or getting ready for school can make great song material.
  2. Pick your main story or feeling. Choose one moment or feeling that stands out from your day's discussion. Maybe it was the excitement of finding a lost toy, the satisfaction of helping a friend, or even the silliness of getting caught in the rain. Having one clear focus will make your song easier to write and more fun to sing. If you have multiple good ideas, save the others for future songs.
  3. Create a simple tune. Start with a melody you already know, like 'Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star' or 'Happy Birthday,' and put new words to it. This takes the pressure off creating music from scratch. Alternatively, try speaking your words in a rhythmic way, like a chant or rap. Clap along to find a beat that feels natural. Remember, your tune doesn't need to be complex – simple melodies are often the most memorable and fun to sing.
  4. Write your lyrics. Tell your story in simple, everyday language. Start with what happened, then add how it made you feel. Don't worry about making words rhyme perfectly – focus on capturing the real experience first. If you want to add rhymes later, pick easy word pairs like day/play, fun/run, or bright/night. Keep sentences short and repeat key phrases to make your song catchier. For example: 'We found a puddle, a great big puddle, we splashed and laughed in the muddy puddle.'
  5. Add a chorus everyone can sing. Create a simple, repeating section that captures the main feeling of your day. This could be as easy as 'What a day, what a day, we had such a wonderful day!' or 'Today was fun, fun, fun, our day has just begun!' The chorus should be easy to remember so everyone can join in. Sing it between verses about different parts of your story.
  6. Practice and perform together. Sing your song together as a family, taking turns with different verses. Don't aim for perfection – the goal is to have fun and celebrate your shared experience. Encourage everyone to add their own style, whether that's clapping, dancing, or adding sound effects. You might discover new verses or improvements as you sing. Consider making this a regular family tradition, creating a new song each week or after special events.
