How to Build an Epic Living Room Fort

Build an amazing blanket fort in your living room using furniture, sheets, and pillows for the ultimate cozy hideout.

  1. Plan your fort layout. Look around your living room and pick your anchor points - these are the big pieces of furniture that will hold up your fort. The couch back, coffee table, and chairs work great. Make sure you have enough space to crawl around inside comfortably.
  2. Gather your building materials. Collect all your blankets, sheets, and pillows in one spot. The bigger the blankets, the better - fitted sheets work amazingly well because they're stretchy. Grab some heavy books to weigh down the edges, and find clothespins or binder clips to attach blankets to furniture.
  3. Create your fort frame. Start by draping your largest blanket or sheet over your chosen furniture. If you're using a couch, throw one edge over the back and stretch it to a coffee table or chairs on the other side. Make sure the blanket creates a roof you can sit under without it touching your head.
  4. Secure the walls. Use clothespins or binder clips to attach the blanket edges to furniture. If the blanket keeps sliding off smooth surfaces, weigh down the edges with heavy books. For extra stability, tuck blanket edges under couch cushions or chair legs.
  5. Add side walls and privacy. Drape additional sheets or blankets from your main roof down to the floor to create walls. You can leave one side open as your entrance, or create a flap door by only clipping the top edge and leaving the bottom free to lift up.
  6. Make it cozy inside. Lay pillows and cushions on the floor for comfortable seating. Add a soft blanket or sleeping bag as a rug. Set up your flashlight or string lights (ask a grown-up to help with plug-in lights) to make it feel magical inside.
  7. Test and adjust. Crawl inside and sit in different spots to make sure nothing falls down when you move around. Tighten any loose areas by re-clipping or adding more weight to the edges. Make sure you can sit up comfortably in most areas.
