How to Play Rhythm Games with Household Items

Learn how to turn everyday objects into musical instruments and play fun rhythm games with your family. HowTo: Family Edition: family how-tos that actually help.

  1. Set up your drum kit. Place your plastic container and metal pot on a flat surface like a table or the floor. These will be your main drums.
  2. Make a shaker. Put a small handful of dry pasta into a clean, empty plastic container. Seal the lid tightly. Ask a grown-up to help you tape the lid shut so it doesn't pop open while you shake.
  3. Learn the steady beat. Use your wooden spoons to tap a steady '1-2-3-4' beat on the pot. Count out loud while you tap to keep your rhythm steady.
  4. Play the Copycat Game. Have a partner tap a short rhythm on their drum. Listen carefully, then try to copy exactly what they played back to them.
