How to Record Your Own Songs at Home
Learn how to capture your musical creations using simple tools you likely already have at home. HowTo: Family Edition: family how-tos that actually help.
- Find your perfect recording spot. Pick a small, quiet room. Rooms with lots of pillows, blankets, or curtains are great because they soak up extra noise and make your recording sound clear instead of echoey.
- Set up your device. Place your phone or tablet on a stable surface at about chest height. Use a stack of books to get the microphone level with your mouth or your instrument. Make sure the microphone isn't covered by a case or your fingers.
- Do a sound check. Record 10 seconds of you playing or singing, then listen to it. If it sounds too quiet, move closer to the device. If it sounds fuzzy or distorted, move a little further away.
- Record your performance. Hit the record button, take a deep breath, and perform your song. Try to stay the same distance from the microphone the whole time so the volume stays steady.
- Review and save. Listen to your recording from start to finish. If you aren't happy with it, don't worry! Musicians often record a song many times before they get a version they love. Save your favorite take with a name you'll remember.
