How to Play Ukulele Songs in One Day

Learn the basics of ukulele playing and master simple songs with your family in just one day.

  1. Get familiar with your ukulele. Start by learning the parts of the ukulele. The four strings are tuned G-C-E-A from top to bottom when you're holding it. Show everyone how to hold the ukulele against their body with their strumming arm, supporting the neck with their other hand. Practice gentle strumming motions across all four strings with your thumb or index finger. Don't worry about making it sound perfect yet – just get comfortable with the feel of the instrument.
  2. Learn your first two chords. Start with C major – it's the easiest chord that uses just one finger. Place your ring finger on the third fret of the bottom string (A string). Strum all four strings and listen to the bright, happy sound. Next, learn F major by placing your index finger on the first fret of the second string (E string) and your middle finger on the second fret of the fourth string (G string). Practice switching between C and F slowly, making sure each string rings clearly.
  3. Add two more essential chords. Learn G major by placing your index finger on the second fret of the C string, middle finger on the second fret of the A string, and ring finger on the third fret of the E string. Then tackle Am (A minor) by placing just your middle finger on the second fret of the G string. Now practice switching between all four chords: C, F, G, and Am. These four chords will let you play hundreds of songs.
  4. Practice simple strumming patterns. Start with the most basic pattern: down, down, up, up, down, up. Count it as '1, 2, and-a-3-and' while you strum. Keep it slow and steady – speed comes with practice. Try strumming each chord four times before switching to the next one. Once that feels comfortable, practice switching chords every two strums, then every strum.
  5. Choose your first song. Pick a simple song that uses your four chords. Great starter songs include 'Twinkle Twinkle Little Star' (C-C-G-G), 'Amazing Grace' (C-F-C-G), or 'You Are My Sunshine' (C-F-C-G-C). Look up the chord charts online and practice playing along slowly. Don't worry about singing at first – focus on getting the chord changes smooth. Once the chords feel natural, add your voice.
  6. Play together as a family. If you have multiple ukuleles, assign different family members different roles. Someone can focus on strumming chords, another can try simple melody picking, and others can sing along. If you only have one ukulele, take turns playing different parts of the song. Create a simple rhythm with clapping or tapping for those not playing. The goal is to make music together, not to sound perfect.
