How to Make a Beat on Your Phone with Your Kids
Learn how to create music beats using simple phone apps that the whole family can enjoy together.
- Choose the Right App. Start by downloading a beginner-friendly beat-making app. GarageBand (free on iPhones) is perfect for families, with simple drums and instruments. For Android phones, try FL Studio Mobile or BandLab (both free). Look for apps with colorful, easy-to-tap buttons and pre-made sounds. Avoid apps with too many complex features that might overwhelm younger children.
- Start with Basic Drum Sounds. Open your chosen app and find the drum kit or beat section. Most apps show drums as colorful pads you can tap. Start by tapping the kick drum (usually the biggest pad) to create a steady boom-boom-boom pattern. Then add a snare drum (often labeled 'snare' or shows as a smaller drum) on every other beat. Let your child experiment with tapping different drums to hear what sounds they make.
- Create a Simple Pattern. Most apps have a 'record' or 'pattern' mode where you can tap drums in rhythm and the app remembers what you played. Start recording and tap a simple pattern: kick drum on beats 1 and 3, snare on beats 2 and 4. Count '1-2-3-4' out loud with your child as you tap. Don't worry about perfect timing - many apps automatically fix the rhythm for you.
- Add More Sounds. Once you have a basic drum pattern, explore other sounds in the app. Try adding hi-hats (cymbals that make a 'tss' sound) for extra rhythm, or simple bass sounds for deeper tones. Let each family member pick their favorite sound to add to the beat. Keep it simple - too many sounds at once can make the beat muddy and hard to follow.
- Make It Your Own. Experiment with the volume levels of different sounds so your beat has a nice balance. Try the app's built-in effects like echo or filters to make your beat sound more interesting. Many apps let you change the speed (tempo) of your beat - try making it faster for an energetic feel or slower for a chill vibe. Save your creation when you're happy with it.
