How to Write Your Own Simple Song

Learn how to turn your ideas and feelings into a song with this easy, step-by-step guide for young songwriters. HowTo: Family Edition: family how-tos that actually help.

  1. Pick a topic. Think about something you care about. It could be your favorite animal, a funny thing that happened at school, or even how much you love pizza. Write down three words that describe your topic.
  2. Write your lyrics. Using your three words, write two or three sentences about your topic. Don't worry about rhyming yet; just focus on what you want to say. If you want to try rhyming, look at the last word of your sentence and see if you can think of another word that sounds similar.
  3. Find your melody. Read your sentences out loud, but try saying them in a musical way, like you are chanting or singing them. Experiment with making some words higher or lower in pitch until you find a rhythm that feels good to you.
  4. Record your creation. Once you like how it sounds, sing it again and record it so you don't forget it. Ask a grown-up to help you use a recording app on a tablet or phone.
