How to Practice Your Instrument Without Getting Bored
Learn how to turn your daily music practice into an engaging game that keeps you motivated and having fun. HowTo: Family Edition: family how-tos that actually help.
- Set a micro-goal. Instead of saying 'I will practice for 30 minutes,' pick one tiny thing to master. It could be playing just two measures perfectly or fixing one tricky rhythm. Write this goal down in your notebook before you start.
- Use the timer method. Set a timer for 10 minutes of focused, intense practice. During these 10 minutes, put away distractions like phones or tablets. When the timer dings, take a 2-minute break to stretch or grab a drink of water.
- Mix up your routine. Start with something you already know well to warm up your fingers. Then, spend your middle time on the 'hard stuff' while your brain is fresh. Always end your practice session by playing something you love and sound great at.
- Record and listen. Use a recording device to capture yourself playing a section. Listen back to it immediately. This helps you hear exactly what needs to be improved and makes it feel like you are producing your own music.
