How to Beatbox the Basic Sounds with Your Kids

Learn the fundamental beatboxing sounds that families can practice together for musical fun.

  1. Start with the Basic Beat. Begin with the classic 'boots and cats' pattern. Say 'boots' normally, then 'and' quickly, then 'cats' normally, then 'and' again. Keep repeating: 'boots and cats and boots and cats and.' This creates the foundation rhythm that sounds like 'boom tss ka tss.' Once everyone can say this smoothly, you're ready to turn it into actual beatbox sounds.
  2. Learn the Kick Drum Sound. The kick drum is the 'boom' sound that replaces 'boots.' Close your lips like you're saying 'B' and push a quick puff of air out. It should sound like a soft 'B' or 'P' sound. Practice saying 'B' without actually saying the letter - just the breathy sound at the beginning. Try it gently at first, then gradually make it stronger and more punchy.
  3. Master the Hi-Hat Sound. The hi-hat is the 'tss' sound that replaces 'and.' Put your tongue against the roof of your mouth like you're making a 'T' sound, then push air through your teeth. It creates a sharp 'tss' or 'ts' sound. Some people find it easier to make a quick 't' sound followed by a soft 's' sound through their teeth.
  4. Add the Snare Drum. The snare drum replaces 'cats' and sounds like 'ka' or 'kah.' Start by saying 'cat' but stop right after the 'ca' sound. Make it sharp and quick. You can also try saying 'k' while pushing air out through the sides of your mouth. This creates that crisp snare sound that cuts through the rhythm.
  5. Put It All Together. Now combine all three sounds in the pattern: kick drum (B), hi-hat (tss), snare drum (ka), hi-hat (tss). It goes 'B tss ka tss, B tss ka tss.' Start slowly and focus on keeping a steady rhythm rather than making perfect sounds. Speed will come naturally with practice, but rhythm is what makes beatboxing musical and fun.
  6. Practice as a Family. Take turns being the beatboxer while others clap, dance, or rap along. Try having one person do just the kick drum while another does the hi-hat. You can also practice the sounds while doing other activities - in the car, while walking, or during quiet time. Make it playful and don't worry about being perfect.
