How to Write a Letter and Mail It Yourself
Learn the step-by-step process of writing a personal letter and mailing it through the postal service.
- Gather Your Letter-Writing Supplies. You'll need paper, a pen or pencil, an envelope, and a postage stamp. Regular notebook paper works fine, but special stationery makes your letter feel more personal. Choose a pen that writes smoothly and won't smudge. Make sure your envelope is large enough to hold your folded letter comfortably.
- Write Your Letter. Start with the date in the top right corner. Write 'Dear [Name]' on the left side, two lines down. Share your news, ask questions, and write like you're having a conversation. Keep your handwriting neat and readable. End with a closing like 'Love,' 'Your friend,' or 'Sincerely,' then sign your name. Leave some space between each part of your letter so it's easy to read.
- Address the Envelope Correctly. Write the recipient's name and address in the center of the envelope. Start with their full name, then their street address, then city, state, and ZIP code on separate lines. Write your return address in the top left corner of the envelope, following the same format. Use clear, block letters that are easy for postal workers to read.
- Fold and Insert Your Letter. Fold your letter neatly in thirds, like folding a business letter. The bottom third folds up first, then the top third folds down. This helps your letter fit properly in the envelope and look professional when opened. Slide the folded letter into the envelope with the fold at the bottom.
- Add Postage and Mail Your Letter. Place one first-class stamp in the top right corner of the envelope. Make sure the stamp is straight and fully stuck down. Double-check that both addresses are complete and readable. Drop your letter in any blue mailbox, hand it to your mail carrier, or take it to the post office. Your letter will typically arrive in 1-5 business days.
